Articles

These free articles were written to help you increase your knowledge within the art of American Kenpo.

The AKKI Crest Patch, Part 1
The AKKI Crest has such deep meaning and so many symbolism's that it would take a book on it’s own to describe every feature. Most of the features have multiple meanings, so only a few will be described here.

The AKKI Crest Patch, Part 2
The words “Kenpo Karate” are written across the crest. The word “Kenpo” means ‘Fist Law’ (Ken -‘Fist’ / Po - ‘Law’) and the word “Karate” means ‘Empty Hand’ (Kara - Empty / Te - Hand). Therefore the phrase ‘Kenpo Karate’ means ‘Law of the Fist and the Empty Hand’.

Mr. Edmund K. Parker
Mr. Parker was also considered the "Father of American Karate" as he opened the first commercial karate studio in the U.S. in Pasadena California in 1956.

Darting Viper
Darting Viper is a fast and deadly defense against a two-hand choke from the front, with your back against a wall. Like the snake of its namesake, its initial strikes dart instantly and ferociously to their targets.

Opposites in Form Four
Everyone knows that the main theme of Form Four is defensive strategies against kicks, punches and kick/punch combinations. But this knowledge only scratches the surface. Looking deeper into the form, one soon realizes that it is a veritable incarnation of the concept of opposite and reverse.

The Teacher
In our Martial Arts journey few will disagree that the coveted "Black Belt" is a goal all aspire to achieve. The desire for this once rare, and elusive, reward is so powerful that it has been exploited by many studio owners, and individuals. One need only to look at some of the marketing strategies used by these schools and individuals to find this to be true.

Pursuit Towards Excellence in the Millennium
We want to be at the forefront of the next millennium. To accomplish this we need to be responsible and take action now to shape our destiny. As we prepare for the 21st century we must have a vision, provide direction, motivation and have a purpose to architect the development for the growth and future of the AKKI. We refuse to accept what is, as what must be.

Self Discovery
When one develops new methods, theories, concepts or ideas there may be others elsewhere having similar findings, or may even seek to claim ownership of them.

Women in Karate
Women in the martial arts face different challenges than men, but also enjoy a unique set of advantages. Kenpo Karate is an art that has long been considered rough and brutal, a man's domain. Yet', it possesses less well-known qualities that have a lot to offer to even the least physically active or timid woman.

Teaching Patience, Takes Patience
With so many new Schools and students joining our Association, it is very important that we all learn to be patient, understanding and tolerant of everyone's weaknesses, yet also learn to acknowledge everyone's strong points.

Universal Plan
Mr. Parker incorporated universal principles into his system to act as a compass, for our benefit. Correct or true principles are like a compass; they are always pointing the way. Mr. Parker shared with us many universal principles to help us attain a universal intelligence.
